Fedora Live USB

Later today, Fedora 9 will be release.

As, I'm using Redhat Enterprise in my work, Fedora is always part of my Linux Multiboot Test System. Next to Ubuntu, I usually spend enough time exploring Fedora and trying many new things that I might see in the next release of Redhat Enterprise. It's always cool to try cutting edge stuffs even it means sometimes it breaks and you need to spend time figuring out how to make it work or fixing it. Well, this is how you learn and you enjoy things anyway, so no complain.

There are many new features in this new release of Fedora. You can go to Fedora website and read them all there directly, but one thing I'm really excited and worth to mention in this post is the new Live USB.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS: Hardy Heron

One of my favorite Linux distro released today Hardy Heron, the second LTS (Long Term Support) for desktop until 2011 and for server version up to 2013.

Download it here or request free CDs here. Also if you are here in Qatar, I can give you free CDs both the Desktop and Server version.

New features include the Wubi Windows installer and Firefox 3 beta 5.

Presently, I'm still using PCLinuxOS as my Desktop here in my house. Very stable!

Later today, I'll try Hardy Heron and see if this is my Linux for the next 6 months as I usually rotate between Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse, Sabayon, and Gentoo.

PCLinuxOS

Athena, our old P4, 512MB RAM desktop is now running PCLinuxOS for almost a month. I'll post here soon how it compares to Ubuntu.

Quick Vi Guide

Vi Cheat SheetHere at work they considered me as Vi expert, hahaha! Every time they need something in Vi they will ask me. I used Vi for 10 years now, and really it is my editor of choice, maybe because I was not exposed to other *nix editor like Emacs, nano and even the graphical gedit - very rare you will see me using it in even I'm in GNOME.

Vi is a terminal-based plain text editor loved by most *nixers. It is most known as a "programmer's text editor," Vi is full of keyboard shortcuts that make it really useful for editing system files and plain text.

Most beginners find that Vi has a hefty learning curve – maybe because they are not really trying to remember those keyboard shortcuts. This learning curve often leaves Vi completely untouched by new Linux users.

I found an excellent introductory Vi guide in UCSD and I’m sure this guide will get you proficient in no time.

Let me quickly quote here Searching and Replacing text as this is the most asked help to me:

/the — Finds the next occurence of "the". This will also find "their", "them", "another", etc.

Oracle-on-Linux Validated Stacks and Configurations

If you are handling Oracle-on-Linux specially for those who are planning to switch or for new implementations and deployments, one of the difficult part of planning is which Linux distro to use? Which server to use? Which storage device to use? Even which Oracle database version to use? Are they all compatible?

Ubuntu Desktop Installation

Five days ago, I upgraded Athena (our main desktop PC here) from 5.10 (Breezy Badger) to 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake); it was pretty easy, and even all my additional installations and hacks like chikka, skype, various multimedia capabilities, and many more; all works like a charm.
